Country Acceptance Disclaimer
Last updated: 2026-05-06
This Country Acceptance Disclaimer explains what our IAA-DLT is, what it is not, and why acceptance varies across jurisdictions. It is incorporated by reference into our Terms of Service and is referenced at checkout for orders shipped to Japan, China, and South Korea.
1. What the IAA-DLT is
- The IAA-DLT is a certified translation of your valid domestic driver’s license, produced by International Automobile Authority.
- It is formatted in accordance with the 1949 Geneva Convention on Road Traffic and the 1968 Vienna Convention on Road Traffic.
- It is intended to help foreign rental agencies, traffic authorities, and law-enforcement officers read your domestic driver’s license by providing a translation.
2. What the IAA-DLT is not
- It is not an International Driving Permit (IDP). In the United States, the only organizations designated to issue IDPs under the 1949 Geneva Convention are AAA and AATA; equivalent authorized issuers exist in other countries. We are not any of them.
- It is not issued by any government and not authorized or endorsed by the United Nations.
- It does not replace your original driver’s license. You must always carry and present your original alongside the IAA-DLT.
3. 1949 Geneva Convention and 1968 Vienna Convention — plain-language summary
Both Conventions are multilateral treaties on road traffic. Contracting states agree to recognize driving documents issued by other contracting states that meet the Conventions’ format requirements. Our IAA-DLT follows those format requirements because it is a translation designed to be read by foreign authorities alongside your domestic driver’s license. Being formatted per the Conventions does not, by itself, confer acceptance. Acceptance still depends on the laws and discretion of each accepting authority.
4. Acceptance is always at third-party discretion
- Acceptance of the IAA-DLT by any rental agency, traffic authority, or law-enforcement officer is at their sole discretion.
- We do not and cannot guarantee acceptance in any particular country, region, or transaction.
- We make no specific “recognized in X countries” claim as a product feature; references to Convention contracting states refer to the Conventions’ published lists, not to any acceptance guarantee.
5. Country-specific notes
5.1 Japan, China, South Korea — rental-company rejection risk
- Some rental companies operating in Japan, China, and South Korea have rejected privately-issued translation documents in favor of government-issued IDPs. This is a well-known market reality.
- For orders shipped to JP, CN, or KR, we display a specific disclaimer at checkout noting this risk. You may still purchase if you intend to use the IAA-DLT in other countries.
- Before relying on the IAA-DLT in these countries, we recommend confirming acceptance directly with your rental company or local authority.
5.2 Other potentially-restrictive markets
Acceptance practices vary and change over time. Before driving abroad, consult the rental company and local law-enforcement guidance for the specific country and region you will visit.
6. Traffic-stop and rental-desk scenarios
- Always present your domestic driver’s license and the IAA-DLT together. The IAA-DLT is not valid without your domestic license.
- If any authority questions the document, remain cooperative. The IAA-DLT is a translation, not a permit; explain that the original is your domestic driver’s license.
- IAA is not liable for any fine, penalty, rental denial, or any other consequence imposed by a third party following presentation of the IAA-DLT. This limitation is subject to non-waivable consumer-protection laws.
7. Rejection Guarantee — cross-reference
If your IAA-DLT is rejected by a rental agency or traffic authority in a contracting-state country and you provide documentary proof within the Rejection Guarantee window, we will issue a full refund on the conditions set out in our Refund and Cancellation Policy.
